The bridges in Grejs Forest
Inside Grejs Forest, you’ll encounter an impressive wooden bridge, adding some variation to your hike. Personally, I love bridges and boardwalks, as they break up the monotony and add an extra dimension to the journey. Several boardwalks appear later on the route, perfectly integrated with the surrounding nature.
Hilly terrain - A true challenge!
Grejsdalstien is anything but flat. It offers a hilly landscape where you often have to go up and down trails and stairs. Start in Jelling if you want to avoid most of the elevation gain, but be prepared to face challenging terrain regardless of direction. A good pair of hiking shoes or boots is a must.
Asphalt and nature in perfect harmony
Although you eventually reach asphalt, it is well-combined with small, cozy paths along water and green nature. The asphalt reminds you that you are nearing Jelling, but nature remains dominant.
Grejs Valley ends in Historic Jelling
As you approach the end of the route, you can see Harald Bluetooth's palisade fence marked with white concrete posts. The palisade, which once surrounded the runestones, burial mounds, and royal estate, is now part of Denmark’s largest Viking site. The Kongernes Jelling experience center, Jelling Church, and the Jelling Stones are definitely worth a visit.
